Orca Researchers Become Subjects

June 4, 2015 Paul Spong

Dr. Paul Spong writes about when orca researchers become subjects as the whales they are studying begin studying them.

“Many of us who have worked with whales and dolphins have come to the realization that at the same time we were attempting to manipulate their behaviour, they were manipulating ours. At the same time we were studying them and performing experiments on them, they were studying us and performing experiments on us. And it did not take long to understand that fear was the principal barrier between us – human beings – and them – killer whales.”
